About this rug

The pale blue main border of this lovely rug is set with cream cartouches. Pretty scrolling vines and small blossoms cover the cream field, worked in pale blue, dusty rose and gray brown. A large lobed medallion sits at the center, its core a small cream diamond rosette on a pale blue ground. The four corners carry the same vine work on a dusty rose ground. The main border runs pale blue, set with cream cartouches and small flower heads. The pile is low in places. In a sitting area, the pale blue keeps the cream and rose muted. At 5'3" by 8'11", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

Since 1850 carpet weaving in Isparta has passed through many stages, and it was the Oriental Carpet Company that first carried its carpets overseas. Under the name “Isparta quality” the carpets of Isparta were famous in the early years of the Turkish Republic. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs rather than tribal ones, so the drawing stays orderly and the field looks even from a distance. Here the floral drawing stays orderly. The pale blue border and the lobed medallion carry a muted tone across the whole face.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
