A lobed cream medallion on turquoise makes this a charming rug. The turquoise field holds a splendid lobed cream medallion with brown outlines and small pendants at the top and bottom. Scattered flower heads in cream and tan float on the open ground around the center. Large cream scalloped pieces curve into the four corners, filled with lovely scrolling vines and leaves. A cream main border carries geometric rosettes in brown and teal, framed by narrow bands of dark dashes. Pale streaks of worn pile run across the field, and the white foundation shows through. It grounds a sitting area, letting the bright teal and soft cream set a cool tone. At 5'8" by 9'6", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

About Manisa rugs
The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that the workshops of Gordes, a Manisa town, were particularly active in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Since 1997 its hand-woven carpets have carried a protected geographical mark. Inland from the Aegean coast, Manisa weaves between two traditions. The geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops often meet in the same rug. This piece keeps that mix, with a shaped central medallion and curling vines in the corners. Rather than the warm, faded palette often seen in the region, this bright teal ground presents the old drawing in sharp, cool light.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
