About this rug

Cream and gray brown vines form an open oval medallion in this lovely rug. Over a turquoise field, a gorgeous open oval medallion of cream and gray brown vines sits at the center, with a small cross-shaped core in pale blue. Scrolls of gray brown and cream curl across each corner of the field toward the open ground. The main border is cream, carrying small blossoms and leaves in brown, teal and sage. Narrow guard stripes in brown and sage line it on both sides. A few patches in the field are worn low, and pale spots show the foundation. It grounds a sitting area, and the cool teal keeps the gray brown drawing light. At 5'8" by 9'5", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

In Demirci, a district of Manisa, almost every household has been known to keep a carpet loom. Since 1997 the hand-woven carpets of Gordes, a district of Manisa, have carried a protected geographical mark. Inland from the Aegean coast, Manisa weaves between two traditions. The geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops often meet in the same rug. Made for houses rather than for export, Manisa pieces come in practical sizes, and the drawing stays unfussy. This rug keeps that unfussy drawing, with an open medallion and scrolled corners set against the ground. The turquoise field holds the cream and gray brown vines in an open frame.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
