Round rosettes in rust and brown scatter across this charming rug. Round rosettes and small flower sprays cover the turquoise field in rust and brown. The pattern repeats across the whole face with no central medallion, scattering the motifs evenly from edge to edge. A gorgeous cream main border carries a delicate scroll of rust vines and teal blossoms around the perimeter. Narrow guard stripes with a geometric key pattern in brown and sand flank the border. Heavy wear shows across the turquoise field, with white foundation flecking through the pile. The cool blue-green ground stays bright and airy, balancing the warm rust accents. At 6'6" by 8'4", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
Isparta was one of only five places where the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers, the big carpet exporter of the day, had workshops of its own in 1909. In the first half of 1911 its Isparta workshop wove more carpet than any of the others, about 12,318 square meters. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs, not tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field tends to read calm from across a room. This piece keeps that structured floral layout, with scattered rosettes and sprays set on a bright turquoise ground, leaving generous open space between the motifs.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
