A lobed medallion with a rosette rests in the middle of this lovely rug. The pale blue field carries a scatter of walnut vines and small tan blossoms around a central shape. A lobed medallion rests in the middle, carrying a rosette within a brown outline and short pendants. A tan band curves around the field with graceful scrolling leaves that echo the middle. The splendid main border runs dark brown, set with a chain of pale flower heads. Narrow guard stripes in tan and gray brown frame the wide brown edge on both sides. Here and there the pile has worn low over the center, with the foundation showing. It suits a calm bedroom, letting the warm brown drawing stay soft against the pale ground. At 5'4" by 8'7", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
By 1909 the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers, the big carpet export company of the day, had workshops in five places, and Isparta was one of them. In the first half of 1911 its Isparta workshop wove more carpet than any of the others, about 12,318 square meters. Isparta sits among the lakes of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops made Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. Colors run chalkier and gentler, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. Being town rugs, the drawing is orderly and the ground looks calm at a distance. Here an orderly floral layout is built from a shaped medallion and curling vines in walnut and tan. A dark brown border holds the pale ground in place.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
