About this rug

Blue, cream and terracotta sit on the charming rust field. Over a rust field, angular vines and stepped shapes in blue, cream and terracotta form a dense geometric pattern. A large serrated medallion of rust and blue sits at the center, with a smaller notched lozenge stacked above and below it. Splendid cream and blue spandrels with jagged motifs occupy the four corners of the field. The main border is slate blue, carrying terracotta diamonds, cream crosses and blue lozenges along its length. A narrow tan guard stripe edges the field inside the border. Small patches of the field have lower pile, where the rust reads paler. It settles the strong contrast of copper and blue into a steady, graphic presence. At 5'10" by 9'6", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Heriz rugs

Heriz carpets as the trade knows them do not predate the middle of the 19th century, when they took the place of a rustic weaving made for local use. The carpets of the Heriz district were sold in the West under village names: Serapi for those in light, rather bright colors, and Gorevan for the darker ones. Heriz sits east of Tabriz, and it does the opposite of what its neighbor does. Where Tabriz draws a curve, Heriz draws a straight line: big angular medallions, bold spandrels, terracotta and copper against ivory. This rug shows that straight line in its serrated medallion and the jagged cream corners, with the slate blue border carrying cream and terracotta motifs.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
