About this rug

A dark brown star medallion with a cream rosette at its heart fills the stepped rust diamond of this charming rug. The rust field is a stepped diamond holding a large star medallion, dark brown with a cream rosette at its heart and points that reach outward. Splendid cream corner pieces with rose vine scrolls fill the four corners of the inner panel, edged in dark brown steps. A wide cream border displays a graceful scroll of flowering plants and birds in deep red, rose and charcoal, framed by thin guard bands of dark vine. Pile is thin through the middle of the field, where the rust reads paler than at the edges. It holds a sitting area together, and the cream border lightens the red center. At 6'5" by 9'4", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ferdos rugs

Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, described Khorasan as almost entirely desert, with its small towns and villages set in scattered oases. He traced the variety of its patterns partly to weavers copying the rugs that pilgrims brought to Mashhad from other provinces. In eastern Persia’s Khorasan region, Ferdos shares a weaving belt with Birjand and Mashhad. Its rugs tend toward the curvilinear drawing of eastern Persia, with repeating floral fields instead of one dominant medallion, on a palette of madder red and indigo. This piece keeps that curvilinear drawing in the border vines and the warm red palette, though it centers on one large medallion instead of an all-over repeat. The birds worked into the cream border are a distinct touch, adding a lively note to the formal layout.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
