About this rug

Wide cream spandrels crowded with pink blossoms and sage leaves fill the four corners of this charming rug. Delicate curling vines and small rosettes in cream, gray beige and pale blue scatter around a large central medallion across the faded red field. The medallion is a lobed navy diamond with a cream core, sending pendants up and down the length. Wide cream spandrels fill the four corners, crowded with dainty pink blossoms and sage leaves. The main border runs navy, carrying large palmettes in gold, cream and rust linked by a fine vine. Narrow guard stripes of cream and red rosettes frame the border on each side. The red field is worn low across the middle, where the weave shows through and the red reads paler. Wide cream corners lighten the heavy red center, balancing the formal layout of this rug. At 7'3" by 10'8", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

From the middle of the 1800s commercial carpet weaving revived in Persia, and Tabriz was one of its most important centers, weaving largely for Europe. The Swiss firm Ziegler, in time the biggest exporter of carpets from Persia, had its first lucky break in Tabriz in 1876. Tabriz in northwestern Persia has a city workshop tradition, and the discipline of the drawing shows it. Medallions sit properly centered, borders turn cleanly at the corners, and the vine scrolls follow a plan laid out in full before weaving began. This rug keeps that discipline in its symmetrical layout and the clean turn of the corner pieces. Gray beige, pale blue and cream sit against the red and navy in this wide palette.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
