About this rug

The elongated near-black diamond medallion is charming, its core a cream palmette cluster. Across a faded red field, pretty scrolling vines and small flower heads in cream, sage green and gray brown fill the space around a central figure. An elongated near-black diamond medallion sits in the middle, its core a cream palmette cluster. Splendid angled corner pieces in cream and near-black sit outside the field’s stepped outline. Around it runs a border of cream and peach palmettes, sage green leaves and small red flowers on near-black, with sage green guard stripes on both sides. The red has faded unevenly, paler in broad patches across the field. It anchors a seating group, the sage green and cream in the drawing easing the red. At 8'2" by 11'6", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

Medallion carpet designs of the 16th century are usually associated with Tabriz, then the Safavid capital and the seat of the royal design workshops. A special court workshop, possibly at Tabriz, is credited with translating the most splendid book illuminations into carpets. The city workshop tradition of Tabriz, in northwestern Persia, shows in the discipline of the drawing. Its workshops used a wider palette than most, so ivory, stone and pale blue grounds appear alongside the reds. Here the field stays red, with the medallion in the middle and the border closing neatly at each corner.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
