About this rug

The close herati lattice on the rust field is charming. A rust field carries a close herati lattice of rosettes, leaves and diamond frames. A gorgeous stepped diamond medallion in deep navy sits at the center, around an ivory core, with a pendant at each end. Ivory spandrels repeat the lattice in a lighter key, and a small navy triangle fills each outer corner. The navy main border alternates ivory rosettes with teal leaves along a rust vine. A wide guard stripe of tiny flowers and a narrow rope-twist stripe flank it. The pile is low, with a few lighter passages in the navy border. The rust and navy suit both cool gray walls and warm plaster. At 8'4" by 11'6", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

Isma’il, the first Safavid shah, was crowned in Tabriz in 1501. Tabriz in northwestern Persia is a city workshop tradition, and it shows in the fine knotting and the discipline of the design. The medallion sits properly centered, the border closes cleanly at each corner, and the vines are laid out by someone who could see the whole cartoon before starting. Tabriz workshops also worked in a wider palette than most, so ivory, stone and pale blue grounds turn up beside the reds. Here the ivory stays in the corners while rust takes the field, which gives this Tabriz a warmer balance.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
