The navy medallion with scalloped edges is charming on the faded red field. The field is a faded red, open apart from sprays of tiny blossoms around the medallion. A navy medallion with scalloped edges holds a cream ring and a red oval core. A long pendant at each end finishes in a small navy cartouche. Splendid cream corner pieces with green scrolls and red flowers sit against a green corner ground. The main border is rust red, carrying dainty palmettes in teal blue and cream between navy guard stripes. Wear has taken the field down low across most of its area, in long pale streaks, most of all in a patch right of the medallion. It brings a soft, lived-in warmth, with the faded red settling into the navy and green. At 7'10" by 11'2", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Tabriz rugs
Tabriz stood for a long period on the great caravan routes to Trebizond and Tiflis, and became the principal market of Persia for the export of rugs. UNESCO lists the historic bazaar of Tabriz as World Heritage and calls it one of the most important commercial centers on the Silk Road. Tabriz in northwestern Persia has a city workshop tradition, and the discipline of the drawing shows it. Medallions are properly centered, borders turn the corners cleanly, and the vine scrolls are planned by someone who could see the whole cartoon before starting. Tabriz workshops also worked in a wider palette than most, so ivory, stone and pale blue grounds turn up beside the reds. Here the cream corner pieces and green corner ground show that wider palette against the red.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
