Layers of navy petals around a pale core make the star medallion lovely. The terracotta field holds small blue and cream sprays scattered around the medallion. A large star medallion holds a pale core and a blue rosette inside layers of navy petals. Handsome pale blue corner pieces fill each corner of the field with scrolling vines and palmettes. The beautiful main border is navy, set with cream palmettes, small flowers and curling leaves. Narrow guard stripes in cream and tan edge the border on both sides. Low patches of pile show in the field, and the foundation can be seen in a few of them. The colors carry a light antique wash that softened them without reaching the drawing. It brings a warm terracotta glow to the floor, and the navy border gives the room an edge. At 8'10" by 11'9", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kerman rugs
The Wagner garden carpet of the Burrell Collection, made in Kerman under the Safavid dynasty, is the earliest garden carpet outside Asia. In the first half of the 20th century Kerman rugs were sold in the West under the name Kermanshah. Kerman in southeastern Persia worked in the softest palette of the major Persian centers: powder blue, ivory, rose and pale green, often on a pale ground. The drawing is curvilinear and open, with more space left empty than a Kashan or a Tabriz would allow. This rug has that open drawing, with the star medallion set in a wide terracotta field and light blue in the corners. Cream and rose tones sit in the medallion itself.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
