Cream and sage corner pieces with deep blue tips are a lovely touch on this terracotta rug. Worked on a terracotta field, curling vines and small blossoms in cream and deep blue spread across the face. A beautiful stepped, lobed medallion sits at the center, holding a small deep blue rosette, with pointed pendants above and below. Cream and sage corner pieces with deep blue tips fill the four corners of the field. The main border is a wide tan band of cream scrolling vines and palmettes. A deep blue band, flanked by two narrow cream bands of small blue flowers, runs just inside it. Small white specks show in the pile, and the colors are soft, while the drawing stays clear. Blue accents cool the terracotta ground when placed among warm woods. At 8'6" by 11'9", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashan rugs
Nothing is known of Kashan carpets from the 1600s through the 1800s; then, at the dawn of the 20th century, a large commercial production arose there. UNESCO lists the carpet weaving of Kashan as living heritage, noting that almost one in three residents works in carpet making and that most of the makers are women. The formal Persian rug is most associated with Kashan, the central Persian city: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. This rug has all three, with a small medallion, blue corner pieces and a field of fine vine work. The terracotta ground and blue accents give the large field a warm look.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
