Rosettes and boteh form a delightful lattice on this terracotta field. Worked across a terracotta field, a fine lattice of small rosettes and boteh repeats in cream, teal and navy. A small central diamond outlined in teal sits at the center, and the terracotta field is cut into a long hexagon around it. Four beautiful cream corner pieces carry teal and blue flowers on a pale ground, set off by a diagonal line. The main border is tan, carrying a repeat of rosettes and small blossoms in teal, navy and brown. Narrow guard stripes in teal and cream frame the border from inside and out. The pile is full across the face. The warm ground lets the teal accents stand out. At 9'1" by 12'10", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mahal rugs
In the late 19th century the Ziegler company of Arak, then called Sultanabad, was the biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad weaving rugs for its market. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia, and they were woven large and open from the beginning. The palette leans soft rather than saturated. This rug has a wide terracotta field and a soft palette of tan, cream and teal. Its motifs are small and closely set in a repeating lattice, and the field narrows to a long hexagon around the small central diamond.

Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
