A charming herati lattice fills this rust red field. A rust red field is filled with a tight herati lattice, the fish-and-leaf pattern. At its center sits a splendid blue sunburst medallion with a cream core and a navy rosette, with a pale blue pendant above and below. Handsome slate blue corner pieces carry the same lattice in a deeper key, each tipped with a pale blue ornament. The light slate blue main border winds blossoms, paisley leaves and cream lozenges along a flowing vine. Narrow guard stripes with a zigzag edge run along either side of it. The pile has worn low in a few places, mostly in the corners. It brings warm red and cool blue into a room, and the pale border keeps the rug light. At 8'6" by 11'10", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Birjand rugs
Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, described Khorasan as almost entirely desert, with its small towns and villages set in scattered oases. He traced the variety of its patterns partly to weavers copying the rugs that pilgrims brought to Mashhad from other provinces. In South Khorasan in eastern Persia, Birjand is the main weaving town, and its rugs are finer and more formal than most village work. This one shows both of the region’s usual plans at once: a repeating lattice across the field and a centered medallion worked with curved lines. The palette follows the regional habit, madder red, ivory and deep blue, with one lighter turn in the pale blue border. The knotting is dense enough that the small herati lattice stays legible at a glance.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
