The scalloped oval outline gives this rose field a lovely shape. Rose covers the field, where small sprays of blue, pink and cream blossoms scatter inside a scalloped oval outline. A handsome navy diamond medallion fills the center, with a pale pink core and floral sprays reaching up and down. Sage and tan corner pieces outside the oval hold delicate scrolling vines and pink flowers. The main border is built of large navy cartouches filled with pink and cream flowers, set on a tan ground. Narrow guard stripes in pale blue scrolling vine run along the border’s inner and outer edges. Pile runs low across parts of the rose field, and the foundation shows in small patches. It anchors a large room, with the navy border framing the soft rose center. At 9'5" by 13'3", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kerman rugs
Marco Polo, by Walter Hawley’s account of 1913, wrote of the beautiful shawls and carpets made by the women of Kerman. Since the 16th century Kerman has been the origin of highly sophisticated carpets in well-organized designs. Kerman in southeastern Persia worked in the softest palette of the major Persian centers: powder blue, ivory, rose and pale green, often on a pale ground. The drawing is curvilinear and open, with more space left empty than a Kashan or a Tabriz would allow. This rug shows that open drawing, with the medallion and the flower sprays set well apart on the rose ground. Its border is navy.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
