Interlocking star medallions in navy and ivory make a remarkable pattern on the red ground. An all-over mosaic: interlocking star medallions in navy and ivory repeat edge to edge across a red ground. Each star holds its own miniature flowers in rose, gold and light blue. The border is just as unusual, a band of arched niches in navy on an ivory ground that echoes tilework more than textile. Softened by age, the whole rug reads like the courtyard floor of an old Persian house. The even repeat across the field makes furniture placement effortless, and the tile-like character gives a room a point of interest few rugs offer. It suits a classic interior as well as an eclectic one that mixes eras with confidence. At 9'6" by 12'10", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

About Kerman rugs
Nadir Shah took many of Kerman’s most skilled weavers north after 1739 and the city was pillaged in 1794, yet its rug industry continued to prosper. In the Persian rug trade the carpets of Kerman rank first, ahead of the rugs of Hamedan. Kerman in southeastern Persia worked in the softest palette of the major Persian centers: powder blue, ivory, rose and pale green, often on a pale ground. Alongside the open medallion carpets, its workshops also produced repeating designs like this one, where the field is built from a tiled lattice rather than a center and corners. The arched-niche border is a Kerman habit borrowed from architecture.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
