A blue field carries a strict grid of tan diamond guls in this amazing rug. A blue field carries a strict grid of splendid tan diamond guls set against red and blue. Each gul holds a small brown lozenge at its core. No corner pieces break the repeat, which runs edge to edge within the frame. A wide burgundy border surrounds the field, filled with rows of small cream dots and zigzag lines in tan. Narrow guard stripes with tiny geometric marks separate the main border from the field. The pile is full over the whole face, keeping every line sharp and clear. It holds a strong graphic rhythm in a small space, balancing the cool blue against the warm red. At 2'9" by 3'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

About Torkaman rugs
A Yomud main carpet of the mid-1850s at the Cleveland Museum of Art has an aubergine ground, and the decorated skirts at each end are its rarest feature. A main carpet was the prized possession of the round Turkmen tent. In northeastern Persia, Turkmen weavers keep to a strict grid of gul motifs, the same octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. That sounds austere, yet it is the opposite, because the drawing never changes and all the life is in the color. This rug preserves that disciplined arrangement, setting the pale figures firmly on the blue ground. Blue and red details stay distinct inside each shape.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
