About this rug

Diagonal bands of black geometric figures cover this lovely rug. Diagonal bands of black geometric figures and small diamonds cover the deep red field. No central medallion breaks the repeat, which runs corner to corner. A wide border in black and deep red frames the design, carrying rows of angular motifs. Narrow stripes with small dotted lines in dark brown flank the main band. The pile is worn low across the lower third, and the foundation shows through. The dense drawing holds its shape in deep red and black, grounding a small floor space with strong contrast. At 2'4" by 2'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

Britannica notes that the better Baluch rugs are usually ascribed to Khorasan, and that they show little relationship to the Turkmen weaving they are often grouped with. A 19th-century rug at Colgate University, attributed to the Bahlul tribal group, repeats diagonal rows of a motif typical of Baluch grain bags. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. The formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. Here the diagonal bands fill the field without a central focus. The red ground and the black drawing keep the pattern readable.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
