The peach outlines on this rug are lovely against the beige field. Over a beige field, peach outlines and gray brown scrolls shape a lobed frame around the center. The central diamond medallion is a gray brown scroll with a pendant above and below it, and small teal sprigs along its edge. Each of the four corners holds a square panel with a small lobed rosette in tan. A handsome tan main border carries mauve-gray palmettes between thin peach lines. Thin peach guard stripes run beside it on both sides. It has had a full antique wash, no color left at strength. The pile is low across the face, with small spots where the foundation shows. The pale outlines stay light, which suits a bright room. At 8'4" by 11'6", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

About Kerman rugs
Marco Polo, by Walter Hawley’s account of 1913, wrote of the beautiful shawls and carpets made by the women of Kerman. The Wagner garden carpet of the Burrell Collection, made in Kerman under the Safavid dynasty, is the earliest garden carpet outside Asia. Kerman in southeastern Persia worked in the softest palette of the major Persian centers: powder blue, ivory, rose and pale green, often on a pale ground. The drawing is curvilinear and open, with more space left empty than a Kashan or a Tabriz would allow. Wide empty space separates the medallion from the corner panels, continuing the pale ground and open drawing. Its colors sit at one warm level, with only small teal marks standing out.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
