About this rug

The faint diamond medallion in soft gray-brown sets the tone for this charming rug. Graceful vines, palmettes and small blossoms in gray brown and pale blue-green cover the beige field. A faint diamond medallion in soft gray-brown anchors the middle, with pendants reaching toward the top and bottom. The field closes in softly curved corners that echo the central shape. Around it runs a gray beige border with small dark brown motifs along each side. A thin band of dark brown links frames the field. Washing has softened the colors, and the field has a low, flat pile. In a large room, the soft blue-green notes lift the warm neutral ground. At 9'4" by 13'5", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Cyrus the Great took Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, in 550 BCE, and Alexander the Great took it in 330 BCE. Several generations ago many rugs from the villages around Hamedan were traded through Mosul, and so were known as Mosul rugs. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. This piece is a large room rug with a loose floral field and a border of small geometric forms. The beige ground carries touches of blue-green and brown.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
