Floral sprays in blue, cream, olive and brown are delightful against the dusty rose field. Set within a dusty rose field, scattered floral sprays in blue, cream, olive and brown spread out from the center. A splendid pointed cream medallion with a near-black center sits in the middle, with small flower clusters above and below it. Beautiful cream corner pieces edged in blue fill the four corners of the field, each ending in a near-black tip. The cream main border carries small blue and brown flowers on a trailing vine, inside bands of brown and blue guard stripes. The pile reads even and full over the rose field and the cream border. Soft rose fills most of this large rug, with deep blue kept to the drawing and the guard stripes. At 8' by 11'7", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, was the capital of Media and later the summer residence of the Achaemenid kings. The physician and philosopher Avicenna died in Hamedan in 1037, and in the 1950s his tomb there was rebuilt as a mausoleum with a museum and a library. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This rug is a room-size format instead, with a single pointed medallion on the rose ground and floral sprays around it.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
