About this rug

Brown vines and palmettes crowd the dusty rose field of this wonderful rug. At the center, a lobed brown medallion with a cream cartouche and a blue diamond core sits on a dusty rose field crowded with brown vines and palmettes. Handsome cream spandrels fill the four corners, holding brown scrolls and blue touches. The main border runs brown, carrying tan vines and blue rosettes, edged by narrow guard stripes in blue-gray and cream. Full pile covers the field and each band. It anchors a sitting area of oak and linen, where the blue notes cool the rose ground. At 7'7" by 10'11", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashan rugs

The story goes that the three Wise Men of the East set out from Kashan to follow the Star of Bethlehem. In the 1600s, when Poland and Persia had close relations, the Polish nobility ordered many gold-threaded rugs from Kashan. The formal Persian rug is most closely tied to the central Persian city of Kashan: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. Kashan rugs were made to be the best rug in a house, and the drawing carries that intent. This rug holds that arrangement, with the medallion and corner spandrels set among the vine and palmette. The dusty rose ground and brown border carry the color, and small blue flowers pick out the drawing.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
