About this rug

An amazing sand eight-point star medallion holds the center of this deep red rug. Worked on a deep red field, lovely curling vines carry ivory and blue flowers across the whole face. A sand eight-point star medallion with a wine red rosette at its core sits at the center, ringed with navy and pale blue lobes. Beautiful blue pointed pendants run toward the top and bottom. Sand and light blue spandrels fill the four corners, carrying navy and red floral scrolls. The border pairs a steel blue band of orange scrolling vine with a wider ivory band of blue and red blossoms. Thin guard stripes in red, olive and navy edge the border on both sides. The pile is full over the field and borders. It grounds a sitting area, letting the bright red field hold the room together. At 6'7" by 12'4", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Najafabad rugs

In the second quarter of the 20th century carpet weaving was revived in Isfahan, and it expanded rapidly on exports made for the European market. Najafabad sits just west of Isfahan in central Persia, and its workshops wove in the Isfahan manner at a more practical scale. That means centered medallions, curling vine and corner spandrels, in room sizes for everyday use rather than for collectors. This rug keeps that layout, with its star medallion and corner spandrels set among curling vine. The red ground carries ivory and blue flowers, and the border pairs light blue with ivory.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
