Small repeating diamonds and boteh make this an amazing rug. The burgundy field is packed with small repeating diamonds and boteh in deep red, cream and touches of blue. A large stepped medallion sits at the center, its core deep red and near-black inside a wide cream band filled with fine geometric figures. The splendid main border runs deep red with small cream and blue motifs, edged by a narrow near-black guard stripe. The pile is full over the face. It brings the deep red and cream into sharp focus against the burgundy ground. At 2'4" by 2'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Sanandaj rugs
In medieval Arab itineraries Sanandaj was called Sisar, meaning 30 heads. Sanandaj has a fortress built under the Abbasid caliphate, between 750 and 1258 CE. Sanandaj is the capital of Persian Kurdistan, known in the rug trade by its older name, Senneh. The weaving is unusually fine for a Kurdish town, and the fields are filled with small repeating figures. This piece keeps that fine weave and the dense scatter of small figures across the burgundy ground. A bold stepped medallion in cream and deep red anchors the composition.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
