About this rug

A dense lattice of near-black hexagonal motifs covers this lovely rug. Over a burgundy field, rows of near-black hexagonal motifs repeat in a dense lattice along the rug. No central medallion or corner pieces break the steady pattern covering the rectangular space. The beautiful main border is deep red, carrying a chain of geometric forms in near-black. Pile runs low in places, with pale patches along the lattice. It grounds the deep red and near-black tones in a tight geometric arrangement. At 3'7" by 6'5", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

A 19th-century Baluch prayer rug at Colgate University shows a tree of life, with side panels in designs also found in Saryk Turkmen weaving. A 19th-century Baluch carpet in the Victoria and Albert Museum has two large red medallions shaped like animals with legs, each holding a small tree. The semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan are the source of Baluch weaving. Because the looms were portable, the formats are small, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried from camp to camp. This rug keeps that repeating vocabulary, with the hexagonal lattice filling the field in a strict grid. The burgundy and near-black palette creates a strong contrast within the small format, framing the geometric drawing clearly.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
