Two large teal stags with bright pink antlers face one another on this amazing rug. The deep red field holds two large teal stags with bright pink antlers facing one another. Dainty flowering branches in cream, olive and rust fill the upper corners, while white rosettes bloom between the animals. A near-black ground covers the lower section, scattered with small red and green blossoms. The main border runs brown, carrying a chain of geometric rosettes in teal, pink and cream. A narrow ivory guard stripe separates this wide band from the pictorial field on every side. The pile is full over the entire face, keeping the bold drawing sharp and clear. It brings a vivid focal point to a small space, the saturated teal and pink standing out against the warm red ground. At 2'1" by 3'3", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Hamedan has had many names: Hangmatana or Agbatana to the Medes, and Ecbatana to the Greeks. It is a trade center on the main highway between Tehran and Baghdad, and in the Persian rug trade its rugs rank second only to the carpets of Kerman. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This rug keeps the bold outlines and strong color contrast of the region’s village work. Two large animals stand within a floral field.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
