About this rug

A stepped diamond medallion sits on the deep red field of this wonderful rug. Worked on a deep red field, small near-black motifs and blue accents scatter around a central figure. A stepped diamond medallion in steel blue holds a lovely cream and red rosette at its core, with beautiful notched pendants reaching toward the top and bottom. Small triangular pieces in blue and brown fill the four corners of the field. The main border runs brown, carrying cream and red geometric forms, framed by narrow guard stripes. The pile is full across the face. The dense drawing keeps the steel blue and cream distinct against the saturated ground. At 2'2" by 2'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Cyrus the Great took Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, in 550 BCE, and Alexander the Great took it in 330 BCE. The physician and philosopher Avicenna died in Hamedan in 1037, and in the 1950s his tomb there was rebuilt as a mausoleum with a museum and a library. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. This piece keeps the bold geometric outline and strong color contrast found in the region’s work. The steel blue medallion stands out clearly against the deep red ground, while the brown border frames the composition with sturdy, angular shapes.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
