A stepped navy and rust diamond medallion sits in the middle of this delightful rug. Over the deep red field, a stepped diamond medallion in navy and rust holds a small central lozenge. Scattered rosettes and curling vines in cream and blue fill the open ground around this central figure. Handsome navy spandrels at the four corners carry large rust and cream floral forms that mirror the border drawing. A wide navy frame carries a scroll of rust blossoms and leaves, edged by a narrow cream guard stripe with a navy vine. Full pile holds the lines crisp against the rich ground. In a tight spot, the warm red and cool navy balance each other. At 2' by 2'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Hamedan was the capital of the Seljuq sultans for 50 years, from the second half of the 12th century. It is a trade center on the main highway between Tehran and Baghdad, and in the Persian rug trade its rugs rank second only to the carpets of Kerman. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses. This piece keeps the strong contrast of red against navy that the district favors. One clear shape occupies the small format, focusing the eye on a single stepped figure.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
