Charcoal vines and dark blue blossoms scroll around the lobed medallion of this charming rug. Across an ivory field, lovely charcoal vines and dark blue blossoms scroll around a central lobed medallion. The medallion holds a packed floral core in slate blue and brown, with pendants reaching toward the top and bottom. A garland of charcoal vines and blue blossoms rings the open ground, with pretty scrolling sprays in the corners. A narrow floral border in charcoal and cream runs around the outside. The pile is low and even, and a few small tan marks show near the edges. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. The blue and charcoal tones give the ivory field some depth. At 4'2" by 7'10", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
The state-owned Sumerbank took over the Isparta carpet factory in 1943 and backed carpet making by hand there with new technology. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs rather than tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This one holds that orderly composition and plain field, with the garland ringing the medallion at an even distance. The charcoal and slate blue stand out against the ivory, setting a sharp outline around the pale center.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
