About this rug

A diamond medallion outlined in green holds the middle of this charming rug. The ivory field holds delicate scrolling vines that carry rosettes and palmettes in rose, steel blue and green. A green-outlined diamond medallion with a graceful pink flower at its core holds the middle. The vine work runs on to the inner edge with no corner pieces. The main border is rose, filled with blue and green blossoms and leaves. Narrow guard stripes in steel blue line the border on both sides. Low pile shows in places; the colors have a light antique wash that stopped short of the drawing. Rose and green notes warm the ivory. At 4'7" by 7'6", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

Carpet weaving gave work to poor families in Isparta, Burdur and places like them, an Ottoman report of 1917 notes. The state-owned Sumerbank took over the Isparta carpet factory in 1943 and backed carpet making by hand there with new technology. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. The green outline of the central medallion adds a fresh note to the soft floral drawing.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
