Olive and brown rosettes repeat in an all-over pattern on this charming rug. An ivory field holds an all-over repeat of olive and brown rosettes linked by fine vines. No central medallion anchors the design, only rows of these flower heads stretching down the length. An olive border carries delicate cream palmettes and small blossoms, with a narrow tan guard stripe on its inner edge. The colors are soft from a light antique wash, and the drawing stays clear. The pile is short and even over the face. The soft green and earth tones stay muted against the light ground in a bright space. At 4'11" by 8'7", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

About Isparta rugs
The carpets of Isparta, known as “Isparta quality,” were famous in the early years of the Turkish Republic. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs rather than tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This piece retains that structured layout, with the rosettes spaced in straight columns across the ivory ground. Rather than the cream and rose often seen in Isparta rugs, this piece uses olive and brown for a muted green palette.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
