About this rug

Scrolling vines link star palmettes and rosettes across this lovely rug. Worked on an ivory field, scrolling vines link star palmettes and rosettes in faded red and blue. Larger red palmettes run in a column down the center, with smaller blue flowers and leaves branching between them. Without a central medallion, the pattern spreads evenly over the open ground. A faded red border carries charming blossoms and geometric flower heads in blue and cream, set off by pale green and blue guard stripes. Wear is light, and the pile stays low and even across the face. The floral layout stays orderly, with red and blue notes kept gentle against the light ground. At 4'11" by 8'7", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

Carpet weaving gave work to poor families in Isparta, Burdur and places like them, an Ottoman report of 1917 notes. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing, and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This rug keeps that orderly drawing, with the palmettes and vines spaced evenly over the ivory ground. The faded red border carries the rose of the Isparta palette, and the blue adds a cooler note.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
