A diamond medallion with a rosette core and pendants sits on this charming rug. Worked on a cream field, lovely curling vines and small blossoms in gray brown spread out from the center. A diamond medallion sits in the middle, holding a rosette core and flanked by splendid pendants that reach toward the top and bottom. Dense floral clusters in gray brown gather near the four corners and echo the central motif. The main border has a pale cream ground, carrying a repeat of gray brown flower heads and leaves. Narrow guard stripes in smoke gray edge the drawing on all sides. A full antique wash has brought every color to one warmth, none at strength. Gray brown motifs show plainly against the pale ground. At 5'9" by 9'3", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
Since 1850 carpet weaving in Isparta has passed through many stages, and it was the Oriental Carpet Company that first carried its carpets overseas. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs rather than tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This rug keeps that orderly floral drawing on a washed cream ground. The gray brown motifs stand clear against the field, and the layout stays balanced from the center to the edge.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
