A notched medallion in smoke gray and cream makes this a charming rug. Smoke gray scrolls and cream leaves fill the medallion at the middle of the dusty rose field. The medallion is a notched, lobed form with a cream core around a gray star, and a small pendant above and below. Gorgeous cream spandrels with gray scrolls fill the four corners. The main border is gray, with lovely pink scrolls and rosettes picked out in cream. Narrow guard stripes in sage and rose, worked with small brown diagonals, run on either side. A few small patches in the field have worn low, and the drawing stays clear under a light antique wash that eased the colors. Rose and gray keep the pattern understated on a ground suited to a sitting area. At 6'6" by 10'5", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

About Isparta rugs
Merchants of 1917 had a name for the most successful Turkish version of the Persian Tabriz carpet: “Isparta quality,” after the place where it was made. In 1943 the Isparta carpet factory passed to the state-owned Sumerbank, which backed carpet making by hand there with new technology. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. This rug shows it in dusty rose, cream and gray, with a single notched medallion at the center. The same scroll turns up in the medallion, the corners and the main border.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
