The central green medallion stands on the gray beige field of this lovely rug. Graceful brown leafy vines and small blue rosettes frame a central green medallion on a gray beige field. This lobed green shape holds red flower heads and a copper center, with small pendants at the top and bottom. A handsome steel blue main border displays large red blossoms with green centers around the perimeter, and a broad burgundy band runs outside it. Narrow guard stripes in gray brown and dark vine flank the blue band on both sides. The pile is thin over most of the surface, and the gray beige ground fades lighter where it has worn. A green note balances the red border against the gray field. At 6'8" by 10'5", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
In 1924, in the first years of the Turkish Republic, entrepreneurs of Isparta backed the founding of the Isparta Yarn Factory. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs, not tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field tends to read calm from across a room. This rug keeps that orderly drawing, with a clear medallion and balanced vines on a gray beige ground. It steps away from the soft cream and rose of the type, using a strong green medallion and a blue border instead.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
