About this rug

The dusty rose field of this charming rug carries a dark green medallion at the center. At the center, a splendid dark green medallion with cream panels and gold accents sits on a dusty rose field. Green pendants extend from the top and bottom of the central shape into the open rose ground. Cream spandrels fill the four corners with scrolling vines and a pink panel in each. A dark green main border carries dainty pink rosettes and pale leaves. Narrow guard stripes in gold and pale blue frame the wide band on either side. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. Pile runs low in spots over the field, and the weave shows in patches. The green border cools the warm rose center. At 7'1" by 9'7", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

Since 1850 carpet weaving in Isparta has passed through many stages, and it was the Oriental Carpet Company that first carried its carpets overseas. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs rather than tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This rug keeps the rose of that palette, with a dark green medallion and border set against it. The medallion gathers the pattern and leaves the field around it open.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
