About this rug

A navy and cream medallion sits on the dusty rose ground of this charming rug. At the center, a splendid navy and cream medallion sits on a dusty rose field. Its lobed core holds a cream center, navy drawing and small teal leaves, ringed by a dainty vine of cream and teal blossoms. Pale spandrels fill the four corners with curling vines and small blue rosettes. A narrow gray brown border is set with small teal squares. Low spots show over the ground, while the colors have eased under a gentle antique wash that left the drawing clear. It anchors a small sitting area, and the teal notes cool the warm rose ground. At 4'10" by 8'8", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

For about seven years, until he became sultan in 1520, Manisa was governed by a young prince, the future Suleiman the Magnificent. The carpets of Kula, in Manisa province, first appear in the 17th century, and the town made its best pieces in the 18th and 19th centuries. Manisa sits inland from the Aegean coast, and its weavers worked between two traditions. A single rug can hold the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops. This piece keeps that mix, with a stepped navy core inside a rounder vine ring and soft floral corners. The dusty rose field carries cream, navy and teal in an unfussy drawing made for a house.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
