About this rug

A beige medallion sits inside a wreath of sage leaves on this lovely rug. Across a lavender field, a handsome beige medallion with a small teal rosette at its core sits inside a wreath of sage leaves and muted pink blossoms. The delicate floral garland curves around the center on the open ground, leaving the lavender clear between the sprays. A cream ground outside the garland holds matching flower heads at the four corners. A brown border carries a dense scatter of small cream motifs around the edge. The pile has thinned in a few spots along the border, and bare weave shows in spots. Lavender and sage tones keep the palette gentle. At 5'8" by 9'3", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

An Ottoman report of 1917 records that merchants knew the most successful Turkish version of the Persian Tabriz carpet as “Isparta quality,” after the place where it was made. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs, not tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field tends to read calm from across a room. The piece retains that structured floral layout, with the central medallion and the garland set clearly against the open ground. The lavender field and the brown border carry the soft, washed tones of the region.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
