About this rug

Large feathery leaf scrolls form rows of rounded cartouches on this remarkable rug. Set within a pale green field, large feathery leaf scrolls in cream and pale green form rows of rounded cartouches down the length. Brown stems link them, and there is no central medallion. The drawing is an all-over lattice of curving leaves rather than a single focal point. There are no corner pieces; the pattern runs straight to the inner edge. A broad salmon pink border carries small flower heads and motifs in brown and green. Narrow guard stripes in dark brown and cream frame the border on each side. The pile is low across the face, with a few grayish worn patches where the foundation shows. It holds the soft green and warm pink together without either one taking over. At 5'1" by 8'5", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that the workshops of Gordes, a Manisa town, were particularly active in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Since 1997 its hand-woven carpets have carried a protected geographical mark. Manisa sits inland from the Aegean coast, and its weavers worked between two traditions. A single rug can hold the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops. This piece keeps the softer floral side in its scrolling field and the geometric side in the border’s blocky flower heads. The colors are warm and gently faded, as the muted pink border and washed green field show.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
