Vines and rosettes cover the pale green field of this lovely rug. Pretty vines and rosettes cover the pale green field, worked in gray brown and cream around a central diamond medallion. The medallion holds a floral core, with small pendants reaching toward the top and bottom. Large corner pieces in gray brown fill the field edges, holding leaves that answer the medallion. A handsome cream main border carries gray brown motifs beside a narrow geometric band. Under a light antique wash the colors are softer, and the outlines read clearly. The pile runs low here and there, with the foundation visible near the middle. The soft green and brown contrast gently against the cream. At 5'4" by 8'8", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Manisa rugs
For about seven years, until he became sultan in 1520, Manisa was governed by a young prince, the future Suleiman the Magnificent. The carpets of Kula, in Manisa province, first appear in the 17th century, and the town made its best pieces in the 18th and 19th centuries. Manisa sits inland from the Aegean coast, and its weavers worked between two traditions. A single rug can hold Anatolian village medallions and the softer floral borders of the western workshops. This one pairs a central diamond with curling vines in the corners. The gray brown outlines stay visible against the pale ground, and the border keeps its design despite the wear.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
