About this rug

A continuous lattice of floral motifs covers this amazing rug. Delicate curling vines and small rosettes fill the rust field in a dense, all-over repeat of dark brown and green. There is no central medallion, only a continuous lattice of floral motifs spread across the ground. A gorgeous muted pink main border carries a trail of dark green leaves and blossoms around the perimeter. Narrow guard stripes in steel blue line the inner edge of the wide band. The pile is full across the rug. It brings a warm red note to a room, balanced by the cool blue lines at the edge. At 5'4" by 8'10", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

In Demirci, a district of Manisa, almost every household has been known to keep a carpet loom. Manisa lies inland from the Aegean coast, and its weaving sits between two traditions. You find the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops in the same rug. The palette leans warm and faded: cream, dusty rose, muted greens. Manisa pieces were made for houses rather than for export, which is why the sizes are practical and the drawing is unfussy. This rug maintains that simple character through its repeating vine lattice. The rust field and the muted pink border hold the warm palette together.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
