An all-over lattice of gray brown vines covers this lovely rug. Across a beige field, an all-over lattice of gray brown vines and small olive leaves repeats without a central medallion. The drawing covers the ground in a steady repeat of dainty curling stems. A wide border in olive carries pretty cream rosettes and gray brown stems around the edge. Thin guard stripes in gray brown and cream frame this main band on both sides. A light antique wash muted the palette but kept every line visible. The pile is low in places. The dense drawing keeps the eye close, letting the green and cream sit together. At 5'3" by 8'8", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Manisa rugs
Suleiman the Magnificent sent his own son, Prince Selim, to govern Manisa in 1544, a posting that had come to mark a prince as a candidate for the throne. The carpets of Kula, in Manisa province, first appear in the 17th century, and the town made its best pieces in the 18th and 19th centuries. Manisa sits inland from the Aegean coast, and its weavers worked between two traditions. A single rug can hold the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops. The colors lean warm and faded: cream, dusty rose and muted greens. These pieces were made for houses, not for export, so the sizes are practical and the drawing is unfussy. This rug keeps that unfussy drawing and the faded palette. The olive border and gray brown vines sit lightly on the beige ground.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
