About this rug

Slate blue line work forms the large lobed medallion of this charming rug. A large lobed medallion in slate blue line work sits at the center of a beige field with a warm tan cast. Small floral sprays in the same blue scatter across the open ground around it, and large pale gray corner pieces drawn in blue fill all four corners. A splendid pale gray main border is worked with small flowers in blue and green. Narrow cream bands edge the border on either side. The pile has thinned over most of the field, and the foundation shows through where the weave is low. A light antique wash has eased the colors, so the blue drawing remains only as outline. The blue and green stay faint on the warm ground. At 5'9" by 9'2", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

Suleiman the Magnificent sent his own son, Prince Selim, to govern Manisa in 1544, a posting that had come to mark a prince as a candidate for the throne. The carpets of Kula, in Manisa province, first appear in the 17th century, and the town made its best pieces in the 18th and 19th centuries. Inland from the Aegean coast, Manisa weaves between two traditions. The geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops often meet in the same rug. This rug holds that blend, with a clear lobed medallion and soft blossoms along the edge. Made for houses rather than for export, Manisa pieces come in practical sizes, and the drawing stays unfussy. Washing has brought everything to one pale level, so the blue drawing shows as faint lines on the beige.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
