About this rug

A lobed medallion with a geometric star rests in the middle of this charming rug. A cream field, washed to warm sand, is traced with lovely slate blue vines and small blossoms. A lobed medallion rests in the middle, its center a geometric star in faded blue, with pendants extending up and down. Handsome corner pieces hold scrolling floral work in the same slate blue against the pale ground. The main border runs blue, carrying cream cartouches and geometric motifs. A full antique wash has brought every color to one warmth, none at strength. A few patches have thinned across the face. Dense drawing holds the blue and sand together in a steady line. At 6' by 9'1", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

In Demirci, a district of Manisa, almost every household has been known to keep a carpet loom. Since 1997 the hand-woven carpets of Gordes, a district of Manisa, have carried a protected geographical mark. Inland from the Aegean coast, Manisa weaves between two traditions. The geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops often meet in the same rug. Made for houses rather than for export, Manisa pieces come in practical sizes, and the drawing stays unfussy. This piece reflects that blend, pairing vine work and a central figure with a geometric frame. The washed cream field and the slate blue accents hold a soft, muted tone.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
