About this rug

This wonderful rug has rows of pale oval frames, each holding a brown rosette. The cream field carries an all-over repeat of pale oval frames, each holding a dainty brown rosette, in rows across the length. Chains of teal and brown diamonds run between the rows, with small teal flowers at the crossings. There is no central medallion, and the pattern runs to the very edge with no separate border. A narrow dark brown line closes each end. The pile is full across the face, and the weave looks even in the close views. Teal notes cool the warm brown and cream throughout the pattern. At 5'3" by 9'1", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

For about seven years, until he became sultan in 1520, Manisa was governed by a young prince, the future Suleiman the Magnificent. In Demirci, a district of Manisa, almost every household has been known to keep a carpet loom. Manisa lies inland from the Aegean coast, and its weaving sits between two traditions. You find the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops in the same rug. This piece keeps that mix, with stepped diamonds meeting the rounded lobes of the field repeat. The drawing stays unfussy, just as pieces made for houses rather than export tend to be. The palette is warm and faded, though the green shows as a clear teal against the brown.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
