Teal and sage floral motifs repeat in rows on this remarkable rug. Set within an ivory field, rows of teal and sage floral motifs repeat down the length of the rug. The drawing covers the whole surface with no central medallion, so the ivory ground shows through between the delicate scrolling vines and small blossoms. A wide pale blue border frames the field, carrying no motifs of its own. A thin near-black line separates the border from the field. The pile is full over the face. In a bright room with white walls, the cool teal notes hold their place. At 5'1" by 8'2", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Manisa rugs
By April 1909 the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers had set up agencies in the carpet towns of western Anatolia, among them Manisa, Gordes, Demirci and Kula. In Demirci, a district of Manisa, almost every household has been known to keep a carpet loom. Manisa sits inland from the Aegean coast, and its weavers worked between two traditions. A single rug can hold the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops. This piece keeps the softer floral drawing, with vines and blossoms set distinct against the light ground. The teal stays bright against the ivory.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
