A lattice of fine vines makes this a wonderful rug. A handsome lattice of fine vines holds small blue rosettes and teal leaves across a cream field. The pattern repeats with no central medallion to break the all-over drawing. A wide blue border frames the field, carrying large cream palmettes and teal accents within its darker ground. Narrow cream and blue guard stripes run along the inner and outer edges of the main band. The pile is low over the field and borders, with the foundation ribbing showing through and a faded patch near the center. It suits a bright room, where the blue frame grounds the airy cream field and its scattered blue notes. At 4'9" by 8', it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Manisa rugs
The future Suleiman the Magnificent governed Manisa as a young prince for about seven years, until he became sultan in 1520. In 1544 he sent his own son, Prince Selim, to govern the city, a posting that had come to mark a prince as a candidate for the throne. Inland from the Aegean coast, Manisa weaves between two traditions. The geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops often meet in the same rug. Made for houses rather than for export, Manisa pieces come in practical sizes, and the drawing stays unfussy. This rug keeps that unfussy drawing in its repeating vine lattice, while the wide floral border brings the softer western influence. The blue border and teal leaves set a cool tone against the warm cream ground.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
