About this rug

Loose vines and tiny blossoms surround a central medallion on this charming rug. Across a cream field, loose vines and tiny blossoms in powder blue and dark blue surround a central medallion. The handsome round medallion holds a violet core ringed by teal petals. Graceful floral sprays in powder blue sit in the four corners. The main border has a cream ground with blue and teal flowers, framed by a narrow teal outer band. The pile has thinned in a few patches over the face, where the weave shows through. A light antique wash softened the colors, and the drawing was left untouched. In a sunlit space, the teal and violet notes stay understated against pale walls. At 4'11" by 8'10", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

The carpets of Kula, in Manisa province, first appear in the 17th century, and the town made its best pieces in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that the workshops of Gordes, a Manisa town, were particularly active in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Manisa sits inland from the Aegean coast, and its weavers worked between two traditions. A single rug can hold the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops. These pieces were made for houses, not for export, so the sizes are practical and the drawing is unfussy. This rug sets a single round medallion in an open field with a simple floral scroll. The teal and violet accents cool the cream ground.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
