Rows of plum floral and diamond motifs cover this charming rug. Worked on a cream field, rows of small plum floral and diamond motifs repeat across the ground with no central medallion. The drawing covers the area evenly and leaves no large open spaces. A beautiful muted pink main border surrounds the field, holding dainty cream rosettes in a row. Narrow burgundy stripes edge the border. The pile has worn low here and there. Plum and cream tones blend gently, lending a soft warmth to the room. At 5'1" by 8'5", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Manisa rugs
Suleiman the Magnificent sent his own son, Prince Selim, to govern Manisa in 1544, a posting that had come to mark a prince as a candidate for the throne. Manisa lies inland from the Aegean coast, and its weaving sits between two traditions. You find the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops in the same rug. The palette leans warm and faded. Manisa pieces were made for houses rather than for export, which is why the sizes are practical and the drawing is unfussy. This rug keeps that unfussy drawing, with the small motifs filling the field and the floral border framing it. The plum and cream stay low in contrast across the whole piece.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
